Day Five’s Bird (of 30): “Stork Delivering to Holiday Party in Sleet Storm”

"Stork Delivering to Holiday Party in a Sleet Storm"

Yesterday’s weather here in New York was thrilling, and generally, we have no option but to deal with it. In fact, I’d say New Yorkers are more in touch with the cycles of nature than most of car-centric America. So often (as I did before I lived here), you can choose to jump into your car in the garage, drive to another garage and jump out. The weather may make driving better or worse, but you’re not really IN IT. Here, you’re generally exposed to the elements when you get from A to B, even if you’re only walking to the subway or catching a cab. You still have to go out there and interact with the weather, good and bad. Yesterday, as I said, was a doozy: a sleet storm blew thru and we dealt with it. Things had to be DONE. Errands do not WAIT for a break in the weather. This delivery stork knows what it’s like, especially right before a big cocktail party. The show must go on and all that.

I’m doing an original work [almost] every day this month. 30 of ‘em in 31 days. The theme for December is birds. All kinds of birds.

An original piece every day, and yes, they’re for sale. And they’re affordable: $99, which includes free first-class shipping. You can order on my Etsy store by clicking here. Check this blog every day (or the Etsy store) to see the new one. Each one will be 5″ by 7″ on sturdy illustration board.

Any birds you’d like to see painted? Let me know! Recent suggestions include an American Kestrel, “the bird”, a siren (half-woman/half-bird mythical beast) and the legendary Phoenix.

Yesterday’s bird: “The Raven”

“Mad Martini,” Day 21 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days (SOLD)

"Mad Martini"

We just watched three episodes of “Mad Men” in two days. Can you tell? Draper’s a ‘bag, but whatever. Let’s enjoy The Style, shall we? Painted this one while listening to lounge music, old and new. The Martini. Invented, it’s said, in Martinez, California, where Joe Dimaggio was born. And he of course married Marilyn, and on the last episode of “Mad Men” we just watched, she had just died. Full circle. Boom. And remember what Dorothy Parker once said: “I like a Martini / Two at the very most / After three I’m under the table / After four I’m under the host.”

I’m doing a painting each day this month. 30 paintings in 30 days. Being November, the Month of the Feast, the theme is Things We Love to Eat and Drink.

I’ll need some content, folks, so if you have any suggestions for good subjects, leave a comment or write to me at john@tebeau.com. What goodies would you like to see memorialized as art? What’s your favorite comfort food? Your most-loved childhood treat? The hometown food you miss most? If you moved away tomorrow, what local specialty would you long for? And, looking ahead, what other themes would you suggest?

Thanks, too, to Michael Stern of RoadFood.com for his mention here.

Day 11 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days: “Red Wine Buzz” (SOLD)

"Red Wine Buzz"

Day 11 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days. Finished this one much later in the day than I would have liked, but hey, it’s still in before midnight. And it was a holiday, so cut me some slack.

Red wine. Buzzed. Look at that glass, all tipsy and whatnot. “Tipsy McStagger”. Remember him? This glass could be called Drunkie de Verre or something like that.

Thanks to those of you who have contributed (among other ideas) a Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger, a grilled cheese sandwich & tomato soup, apple pie and ice cream, meatloaf, asparagus and red velvet cake. Keep ‘em coming!
