“Minerva’s Owl (from the one dollar bill)” (SOLD)

"Minerva's Owl"

Take a one dollar bill out of your wallet. Yes, yes, I know: “times are tough, blah blah blah.” Just do it. Look at the “1” in the upper right-hand corner. Look at the little “frame” around it. Now look REEEEALLY closely at the notch in the upper left hand corner of that frame. See that little bump? That’s not a printing glitch. That’s… MINERVA’S OWL. [cue eerie theremin solo]

Minerva was the Roman version of Athena; a goddess of poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, weaving, crafts, magic and the inventor of music. The owl was her sidekick, her familiar, her sacred creature: thus, the association with wisdom.

Thar he be!

And somebody in the government paid someone to engrave that bird onto the U.S. buck. And by gum, he’s still there. Draw your own conclusions. This is my version of that itty-bitty little owl, really close-up like.

I’m doing 30 original works this month. The theme for December is birds. All kinds of birds.

30 original pieces, and yes, they’re for sale. And they’re affordable: $99, which includes free first-class shipping. You can order on my Etsy store by clicking here. Check this blog every day (or the Etsy store) to see the new one. Each one will be 5″ by 7″ on sturdy illustration board.

Last month’s theme was food and drink, this month it’s birds. Any other themes you’d suggest?

“The Pigeons Who Had Places to GO”: Bird Art # 3 of 30 (SOLD)

"The Pigeons Who Had Places to GO"

So I’m in the East Village this afternoon, going to the coffee shop on Ninth for a little jolt of joy juice, and I remember this image that had jumped into my head this morning: a flock of birds on the wing. Then I look up and see just that. I snapped a quick picture (always always always carry a camera in New York). This is an approximation of what I saw.

I’m doing an original work [almost] every day this month. 30 of ‘em in 31 days. The theme for December is birds. All kinds of birds.

“Blue Bird.” Day 2 of 30 Birds in 31 Days. (SOLD)

"Blue Bird"

Did you ever have a day when you felt like this poor devil? No? You’re lying. Or, maybe you don’t live in a big city and you’re healthy and well-adjusted. Bully for you. Bully, I say. This is how I felt today. And when you have the blues, you can piss and moan and drink, or turn it into art. I did all three today. The trifecta.

I’m doing an original work each day this month. 30 of ’em in 31 days. The theme for December is birds. All kinds of birds.

“First Snow”, Day 1 of 30 (more) Paintings in 31 Days (SOLD)

"First Snow"

A tribute to the haiku-like serenity of that first soft snow of the winter….

The moment doesn’t last, either. It’s only still enough in the early morning, before the wind picks up again. It’s fairly common at night for the wind to die down (allowing perfect, even snowfall), only to begin whipping around in the daylight hours. You have a very brief window to see a moment like this. Except in a painting, say. This one is based on an acrylic that I did last year, which has since sold.

I’m doing a painting each day this month. 30 paintings in 31 days. December’s theme is BIRDS. All kindsa birds. Have any suggestions? I’d like to hear them.

“Wisconsin Summer Sausage with Cheese”, Day 30 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days (SOLD)

Happy birthday, Pink!

Summer in the northern Great Lakes region is short and sweet, so if you live up there, you enjoy it, dammit. In Wisconsin, that would be done with meat and cheese and beer. Which is exactly how they get through the winter, but never mind. Stick with me on this summer thing. Note the jolly rays in the background, as if Jesus himself just happened to be passing by the shore of Lake Winnebago in Fon du Lac County in time for some good eats. Hurry! The Packers’ first pre-season game kicks off in five minutes!

Numero trienta. Well, that’s it for 30 paintings in 30 days. For NOVEMBER, anyway. I think we’ll keep going in December, but with a new theme. Birds. Birds it is. 30 Birds in 31 Days. One day off for good behaviour. (Ah, look at that puckish British spelling there. *chuckle!*)

Birds, birds, birds. Of course there’s your standard fare: the cardinal, the blue jay, the majestic pigeon, etc. Then there are the nicknames: Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker, Mark ‘The Bird’ Fidrych, and Douglas ‘Stork’ Kenney of “Animal House” fame. There’s Big Bird, flippin’ the bird, bird-doggin’ and the Yardbirds. There are Philadelphia Eagles and Bal’more Orioles, banty roosters and chicken shits, bird brains and game cocks. Heh. Hey, how about we lead up to Christmas with the seven swans a-swimming and their whole gang, right on down to the partridge in a pear tree? Oh, we’ll have EVER so much fun with this theme, kids!

What ideas do you have, bird-wise?

Comin' atcha in December

“Vintage Vernor’s”: Day 24 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days (SOLD)

"Vintage Vernor's"

If you’re from the Detroit area in particular or Michigan in general, you may have an appreciation for Vernor’s, one of America’s great regional soft drinks. This spicy, hyper-bubbly barrel aged ginger ale has made Michigan kids sneeze for generations. Here’s a look at one of their vintage bottle, all hot-an’-spicy-like.

I’m doing a painting each day this month. 30 paintings in 30 days. Being November, the Month of the Feast, the theme is Things We Love to Eat and Drink.

A painting a day, and yes, they’re for sale. (except this one, which has already been sold) And they’re affordable: $99, which includes free first-class shipping. You can order on my Etsy store by clicking here. Check this blog every day (or the Etsy store) to see the new painting du jour. Each one will be 5″ by 7″ on sturdy illustration board.

I’ll need some content, folks, so if you have any suggestions for good subjects, leave a comment or write to me at john@tebeau.com. What goodies would you like to see memorialized as art? What’s your favorite comfort food? Your most-loved childhood treat? The hometown food you miss most? If you moved away tomorrow, what local specialty would you long for? And, looking ahead, what other themes would you suggest?

Tip o’ the day: Check out EatingtheRoad.com. The flow-charts alone are worth the trip.

Coming soon: Wisconsin’s Pride: cheese & summer sausage, a deconstructed Blimpy Burger, Cafe Du Monde beignets & café au lait, and a few holiday favorites.

Thanks, too, to Michael Stern of RoadFood.com for his mention here.
