“Winter Berries”: an original bird painting

"Winter Berries"

I’m walking through the neighborhood today, on Berger Street near Boerum, right in front of Vinnie’s Iron Works. The snow crunches and squeaks under my feet as I walk. The sky is light grey, almost white. I look up. There are birds in the tree, eating berries. They’re back-lit by the sky, and I see them and the tree as a silhouette.

I’m doing 30 original works and the theme is birds. All kinds of birds.

30 original pieces, and yes, they’re for sale. And they’re affordable: $99, which includes free first-class shipping. You can order on my Etsy store by clicking here. Check this blog every day (or the Etsy store) to see the new one. Each one will be 5″ by 7″ on sturdy illustration board.

Last month’s theme was food and drink, this month it’s birds. Any other themes you’d suggest?

“WAKE UP! (the Car Alarm Bird)”, day 6 of 30 Birds (LOST in MICHIGAN. Anyone know where?)

“WAKE UP! (The Car Alarm Bird)”

There once was a delightful little bird who loved to hang out right outside our bedroom window, and SCREAM HIS HEAD OFF at about 5:00 every morning. This is what I think he looked like. My wife called him “the Car Alarm Bird.” I give you: “WAKE UP!” I hope an American Kestrel ate him.

Day Five’s Bird (of 30): “Stork Delivering to Holiday Party in Sleet Storm”

"Stork Delivering to Holiday Party in a Sleet Storm"

Yesterday’s weather here in New York was thrilling, and generally, we have no option but to deal with it. In fact, I’d say New Yorkers are more in touch with the cycles of nature than most of car-centric America. So often (as I did before I lived here), you can choose to jump into your car in the garage, drive to another garage and jump out. The weather may make driving better or worse, but you’re not really IN IT. Here, you’re generally exposed to the elements when you get from A to B, even if you’re only walking to the subway or catching a cab. You still have to go out there and interact with the weather, good and bad. Yesterday, as I said, was a doozy: a sleet storm blew thru and we dealt with it. Things had to be DONE. Errands do not WAIT for a break in the weather. This delivery stork knows what it’s like, especially right before a big cocktail party. The show must go on and all that.

“Blue Bird.” Day 2 of 30 Birds in 31 Days. (SOLD)

"Blue Bird"

Did you ever have a day when you felt like this poor devil? No? You’re lying. Or, maybe you don’t live in a big city and you’re healthy and well-adjusted. Bully for you. Bully, I say. This is how I felt today. And when you have the blues, you can piss and moan and drink, or turn it into art. I did all three today. The trifecta.

I’m doing an original work each day this month. 30 of ’em in 31 days. The theme for December is birds. All kinds of birds.

“First Snow”, Day 1 of 30 (more) Paintings in 31 Days (SOLD)

"First Snow"

A tribute to the haiku-like serenity of that first soft snow of the winter….

The moment doesn’t last, either. It’s only still enough in the early morning, before the wind picks up again. It’s fairly common at night for the wind to die down (allowing perfect, even snowfall), only to begin whipping around in the daylight hours. You have a very brief window to see a moment like this. Except in a painting, say. This one is based on an acrylic that I did last year, which has since sold.

I’m doing a painting each day this month. 30 paintings in 31 days. December’s theme is BIRDS. All kindsa birds. Have any suggestions? I’d like to hear them.

A painting a day, and yes, they’re for sale. And they’re affordable: $99, which includes free first-class shipping. You can order on my Etsy store by clicking here.
